TOO LATE.
Michael had once been a government scientist, one of the few people who knew for certain that aliens existed.
He had studied their technology, examined their biology and helped prepare Earth for the possibility of their return.
He had never realised they were studying him too.
Then they took him.
Weeks passed—or perhaps months. Beneath the cold lights of an alien laboratory, time became impossible to measure. Michael remembered examinations, strange instruments and voices he could not understand.
Why had they chosen him? For his knowledge? His DNA? Neither question received an answer.
When they finally returned him to Earth, they sent him back in a woman's body.
The documents left beside him identified her as Michelle. The photograph matched her unfamiliar face perfectly. Nothing connected her to the missing scientist.
Michelle went straight to the facility where Michael had worked.
Her fingerprints failed the scanner. Her voice meant nothing to security. She gave them classified details, named colleagues and begged them to contact her department.
They detained her for questioning.
She was still trying to convince an investigator when the lights flickered. Somewhere beyond the interview room, an alarm began to sound.
The investigator touched his earpiece, listened, then hurried out without another word.
Michelle stared through the narrow window in the door. Staff were running down the corridor. On a wall-mounted television, the morning news disappeared beneath an emergency broadcast.
A vast shape hung above the city.
She recognised the vessel immediately. She had spent months inside it.
The aliens had returned.
And the one person who might have helped Earth prepare was locked in a room, waiting for somebody to believe her.
